BUSH VINES TRAINED ON A SINGLE STAKE FOR EACH VINE

An innovation first experimented in the Pozzo vineyard in the year 1990, this type of high density training system is a return to the traditional vineyard-type of the Romagna hills. The principal advantages are the 360° exposure of the vine leaves which aid in creating an optimal activity of photosynthesis and the possibility of carrying out the picking in whatever direction is most convenient (something which is impossible in a normal espalier vineyard). This new vineyard was also the first to utilize various clonal selections, whose response to this training system guided the reconversion of the other vineyards in the following years.

NEW VINEYARDS

Given the excellent results obtained with this new training system, one with a single stake for each vine, but given as well the high costs which this type of vineyard necessarily implies, the reconversion program for the other vineyard begun in the early 1990’s on was carried out with the introduction of an espalier training system quite similar to the “gobelet” of Bordeaux, one which was capable of reconciling high vine density, a gobelet training system, and a rational mechanization of the vineyard work. Today this combination of espalier and gobelet is the most widely utilized training system at the Fattoria Zerbina estate and unquestionably will continue to be in the future as well.
